Ahh aging. That all-time nemesis of the twenty-first century. Everywhere you go, people are trying to look younger. We buy all sorts of high-tech anti aging skincare products, try exercise regimes, new workouts, spending hundreds or even thousands on spa treatments, facials and invasive surgical procedures. Just so they can look 5 to 10 years younger. And what is the bottom line? WHY are we all trying to erase the signs of our maturity and experiences? Many blame media or modern culture for putting such a high value on youth and vigor that all other valuable attributes have simply slipped away. Indeed, we see evidence of this all too often - from the workplace that lets their oldest employee go for “budgetary” reasons, to the new dating trend preference of of choosing someone 10 to 20 years your junior.
Maybe it’s the inevitable fear of death that keeps most of us clinging to our years already gone by, but our society looses so much of its value and wisdom by simply paying attention to the surface appearance. Drink More Water
Water makes up approximately 60% of the human body, and there is water in every cell of the body. We cannot survive without water for longer than a few days. With age our sense of thirst gradually diminishes, and the water content of body decreases so many elderly people are somewhat dehydrated. Dehydration is linked to allergies, hypertension, general aches and pains and of course, bad digestion.
Use Organic or Natural Skincare Products
Natural skin care goes beyond the application of products on one’s skin. It also pertains to a holistic philosophy surrounding the care of one’s body. This includes the belief that what is ingested will affect all aspects of health, including the health of skin. People who use natural skin care products are less concerned with artificial beauty enhancements, as they feel that natural beauty is healthy beauty.
Some examples of natural skin care ingredients include jojoba, safflower oil, rose hip seed oil, shea butter, beeswax, witch hazel, aloe vera, tea tree oil, and chamomile. Many of these natural ingredient combinations can be tailored specifically to the individual’s skin type or skin condition.
Eat Healthily

Basic Guidelines For A Simplified Balanced Diet
* Avoid white flour products
* Eat whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, millet etc.
* Avoid sugar - rather use honey, agave, xylitol or stevia.
* Eat a variety of legumes (beans, lentils etc.)
* Avoid all hydrogenated fats (margarine etc.)
* Avoid fried foods
* Include low-starch vegetables preferably eaten raw.
* Include foods rich in omega-3 fats.
* Include low-fat, organic protein sources (fish, spirulina, organic whey protein, quinoa)
* Include fresh organic fruit (especially from the super food range) and raw nuts.
* Avoid colourants, flavourants, preservatives and artificial sweeteners.
Whole foods are better than processed. Refined foods result in both a measurable loss of nutrients and an unbalanced food, which creates imbalance in the body when eaten. Living food (such as fresh fruit and vegetables) are more nutritious and better than “dead food” (such as canned foods). Foods grown in “live soil” (organic food) is better than food grown in “sterile soil”. This has largely depleted trace minerals in foods.
How Does Eating Sugar Make You Old?
Eating sugar causes your body to secrete high levels of insulin. Insulin and the stress hormone, cortisol, are two hormones that can dramatically speed up the aging process. Sugar depresses the immune system; it contributes to atherosclerosis, and it causes oxidative stress by creating AGEs (advanced glycosylated end-products). Organic Facial Mask Recipes From Home

If you are looking for some great homemade facial mask recipes to save some money, keep reading. Some of these facial skincare tips I found on the web, others were notes from herbal classes I took. So, depending on your skin type, here are lots of great facial masks to try at home. When possible always try to use organic or natural ingredients to prevent possible allergic reactions. Enjoy!
FOR OILY SKIN
For oily skin use some plain Milk of Magnesia, rub it on your face and neck area and let dry, then rinse with lukewarm water. It absorbs oil wonderfully!
I haven’t tried this one personally, but I heard it works well too. Said to have a cleansing and softening effect: mix regular clean kitty litter, the clay kind, with water and strain out the grit. Mix in a little water and appy to a damp face for 10-15 min.
For normal to oily skin, use an egg white.
FOR NORMAL / COMBINATION SKIN / ACNE
Why buy acne products when you use strawberries? Strawberries are a natural source of salicylic acid which is found in most over-the-counter acne medicines, according to Janice Cox, the author of “Natural Beauty at Home.” This is Cox’s recipe. The yogurt is great for soothing skin.
Ingredients:
* 1/4 cup strawberries (fresh, not frozen please)
* 1/4 cup sour cream or non-flavored yogurt
Preparation:
Mash together the strawberries and yogurt or sour cream. Spread on face and wash after 10-15 minutes.
ADDITIONAL FACIAL MASK RECIPES
Mix one egg and 1/2 cup cooked instant oatmeal and a teaspoon olive oil until smooth. Spread on your face and leave 15 min then rinse.
For trouble-prone skin, mix oatmeal with water to form a paste.
FOR DRY SKIN
For dry skin, mix one egg yolk, one teaspoon honey and a teaspoon olive oil and some vitamin E oil if you have it. Smooth on and leave on for 15 min. Rinse in lukewarm water and pat dry. If your skin is a bit dry you can put a dab or two of either extra virgin olive oil, or any light organic oil, like jojoba or almond if you need a heavier moisturizer after cleansing or a good moisturizing facial mask.
Homemade Facial Scrub Instead of Soap
For a homemade facial mask. First, clean your face with water only. Never use plain store-bought soap. If you do use soap, make sure its a n organic or natural blend that won’t strip your skin of it’s natural acid mantel. You can also open your pores with hot compresses (washcloth).
For a great facial scrub, moisten oatmeal to a “gooey” consistency, use it to scrub your face (not around your eyes). Wash off with cool water. You may also make a paste of the oatmeal and allow it to dry..remove with cool water.
Sliced fresh cucumber placed on your closed eyes will reduce bagginess and dark circles.To make your hair shine, rub in some regular mayonnaise,shampoo out after 15 minutes.
Honey wins for Best Organic Facial Treatment
One of the best facial masks that I have found is honey. Honey is a antural anti-micoribal and an excellent wound healer. First, use a warm cloth to open pores, smear on organic or herbally infused honey, leave on 15 to 30 minutes, rinse off with warm water, and then use cold water to close pores. Use for 3 days in a row and then once a week.
You can also mix a little gound oatmeal with the honey, which makes an excellent natural face mask.
Exfoliating Facial Mask
For an easy exfoliating mask, mix three tablespoons olive oil or any skincare oil (almond, jojoba) and one tablespoon kosher salt mix and gently rub into dry skin. Do not use around eye area. This works great on elbows and feet, but it can also be used on cheeks and forehead
Egg Whites / Egg Yolk Facial Masks
Just beat one egg white until it is frothy. Spread it all over your face. Wait until it dries. Rinse it off. My face feels very clean and “tight” after this application. And then you can use the yolk for cooking.
Some reccommend using a raw egg yolk. Just apply the raw yolk to your face and neck for 30 minutes and rinse with cool water. Egg yolks are high in vitamin A. The mask is very effective in healing blemishes.
Match Your Facial Mask to Your Skin Type
For normal to oily skin, use an egg white.
For dry skin, use an egg yolk.
In all cases, spread mixture on face and allow to dry. Rinse thoroughly with cool water.
For oily skin, witch hazel makes an inexpensive toner.
For dry skin, you may want to add moisturizer while skin is still damp.
One reader said ” The cheapest and best facial mask I have ever come up with is oatmeal processed to a powder in the blender and either skim milk. If you are trying to fade spots, use lemon juice. Really works well for dry skin.”

The kind of the mask you want to use depends on your skin type.
For dry skin, try:
* an egg yolk mixed with olive oil and warmed honey
* sour cream
* plain olive oil
* avocado
For oily skin:
* dissolve a teaspoon of baking yeast in a small amount of warm milk, wait until foamy, then apply (best done in the bath tub)
* puree flesh of a tomato and mix with some potato flour to make a paste;
* cucumber (it will whiten your skin);
* beaten egg whites with a few drops of lemon juice (great for getting rid of blackheads);
* carrots (but don’t use this one more than about every other week because it can overdry your skin). This one will make you look tanned.
General refreshing masks:
* grapes (just cut a berry in half and rub lightly)
* strawberries (test behind your ear first, because many people are alergic to strawberies used this way even though they can eat them just fine)
* honey and ricotta cheese
Many fruits and vegetables can also be used to good effect. Anything acidic (lemon, strawberries, etc) will tend to whiten and refresh your skin, but you need to be careful if your skin is dry.
In general, don’t apply masks more often than about twice a week, and try to vary the ingredients.
It is a good idea to test the mask first for allergic reactions. Apply a small amount behind your ear, wait 20 minutes, then wash off. Then wait 24 hours. If the skin behind your ear is normal, then go ahead and use the mask.

Don’t Smoke

Even more shocking, a study published in the British Medical Journal featured a doctor who could distinguish a non-smoker from someone who has been smoking for ten years or more based on their facial features alone. A single cigarette contains thousands of toxins that seep into the bloodstream and affect the appearance of skin. In addition, scientists have calculated that every cigarette takes ten minutes off your life.
Wear Sunglasses
Long before they became fashion statements, sunglasses served a humble purpose: to protect the eyes from the sun. Skin near the eyes is extremely delicate, and since we can’t apply sunscreen to these areas, we need the UV protection provided by sunglasses. Not wearing sunglasses can also cause you to squint, which can lead to wrinkles over time.
Get Adequate Sleep
While we sleep, our body generates new skin cells, repairs damaged ones and strengthens collagen. Doctors recommend seven to eight hours of sleep each night for maximum performance during the day. In addition to under-eye bags - the tell-all sign that you’ve been up all night - lack of sleep can cause skin to appear dull, puffy and wrinkled.
Sleep on your back
In a perfect world, we would get our beauty sleep every night. However, in today’s fast-paced world, eight hours of sleep each night, every night is not always possible, therefore, it’s important to make the best of the time we do have to rest. We are up and about at least 12 hours a day, and gravity can take its toll. Sleeping on your back instead of stomach promotes circulation, and reduces wrinkles since your face is not buried in a pillow.
Limit Your Stress Level
Stress is an inevitable part of life, but not all stress is bad. There are two kinds of stress: eustress and distress. Eustress keeps us energized about life and stems from exciting events such as starting a new job, getting married or simply getting on a roller coaster ride. Unfortunately, most of us are more familiar with distress (negative stress) which can weaken our immune system and cause hormonal changes that result in pimple breakouts. Participating in stress-reducing activities such as exercise, spending time in nature and yoga is key in balancing eustress and distress.

The Skin is Your Largest Organ

It is a beautiful and complex wonder, each square inch of our skin contains about 65 hair follicles, 100 sebaceous (oil) glands, 78 yards of nerves, 20 yards of blood vessels, 650 sweat glands, 9.5 million cells, 1,300 nerve endings, 19,500 sensory cells at the ends of nerve fibers, 80 cold detection nerve endings and 165 pressure sensors. This amazing organ, keeps our entire body safe from the environment while providing a way for us to detect pain, pressure, heat and cold. It allows us to sweat to help cool ourselves when we are overheating. Our skin darkens if exposed to sunlight to help protect us against cancerous rays.
We must realize that just like the lungs, our skin is a living, breathing organ. Aided by the circulatory system, it takes in oxygen and expels waste and toxins, performing up to 3 % of oxygenation to the body. This organ also functions as kidneys do in eliminating about 2 pints of water and salts each day.
Through the ages, people have searched for ways to have beautiful skin. Having healthy and fresh skin is possible at any age, providing you take the correct approach. The question that we need to answer is; when is skin beautiful? The answer; when skin is moist, vibrant, free of blemishes and toxins. Healthy skin has tight pores and exhibits a refined texture. Skin health is a very important ingredient in our self-image and how the world sees us. One could say our skin is an indication of our overall well-being, both physically and emotionally.

There are three main layers to our skin:
Epidermis
The top layer, the epidermis, is the outer layer that we see. This layer’s job is to provide the ‘barrier’ between your body and the outside world. The very outer layer of the epidermis is formed by a layer of dead skin cells which fall off and allow newer, living skin cells to be exposed to air. This cycle is continuous throughout life. Most beauty products affect the epidural layer. When young, this layer replaces itself every 16 days or so, giving you fresh, healthy looking skin. By the time you hit 35, the layer is only replacing itself about once a month so our skin may begin to look more tired and worn.
Dermis

This is where the elastin and collagen live, forming the structure of your skin. Elasticity and firmness are provided by the dermal layer. Subcutaneous tissue
The lower layer of your skin is the subcutaneous tissue. The sweat glands, hair follicles, and main blood vessels of your skin reside in this layer. Bulbous follicles originate from this layer and can be seen when you tweeze or pluck your hair. Each layer of skin has a separate life cycle. While the top epidermal layer exfoliates regularly, the dermis is a much more permanent layer. Permanent skin tattoos result from injecting ink into the dermal layer. As a result, the epidermal layer constantly renews, but the tattoo remains for a lifetime.

Skin Care Ingredients to Look For

Before we have a discussion of specific ingredients, it’s important to educate ourselves a little bit more on skin itself and what makes a product good or poor. Your skin is the largest organ of the body. Anything you put on it can be easily absorbed through the pores. When you use skin care products, they are typically applied all over the face, neck, and body. This covers a lot of surface area and, therefore, a great deal of chemical absorption occurs.
The biggest reason our skin, whether on the face or the rest of the body, develops lines and/or starts to sag, is that the collagen and elastin in our skin begins to break down. Collagen is a protein that is fibrous in nature. What makes collagen different from other kinds of protein is that it possesses great tensile strength, which means, among other things, it provides firmness to the skin.
You don’t need to be a scientist, therefore, to understand that as collagen breaks down due to aging, the firmness of our skin becomes…well, less firm. Wrinkles appear and skin starts to sag.
Elastin, too, is a protein that helps skin stay “flexible” and firm. If your skin is stretched, elastin is the protein that helps it return to its original position.
What all of this means for you as a consumer is you do want to avoid buying products that are nothing more than wrinkle or fine line ‘fillers.’ Some creams will give the appearance of plumper fuller skin while it still sits on the surface, but once absorbed or removed, the illusion is gone. Want you want to look for is a product that actually stimulates new collagen and elastin production in your skin. If you achieve this, you will, in reality, begin to turn back the clock.
Unfortunately, some cosmetic manufacturers will include some great ‘active ingredients’ while filling the majority of the product with inferior filler. Over cleansing the skin can cause irritation and may aggravate your skin condition, as well as encourage you to use other products that will grease up your skin. This may then complicate your skin care. You may need to use a toner to remove the oil, which in turn may irritate your skin further.
Cleansers Can Be Grouped As:
1. Wipe-off cleansers (cold creams and makeup removers)
2. Soaps
3. Water soluble cleansers - these are the most gentle
Water-Soluble Cleansers (Soap Substitutes):
These should be non-irritating, non-greasy, unscented, and able to remove some excess skin oils as well as
cosmetics.
Oily Skin:
The selection of cleansers for oily skin should involve using products that rinse off well, both bar soaps and
liquid cleansers have been formulated for this purpose. Many of the soap gels and stronger liquid cleansers are helpful for oily skin. Because the skin on the face, chest, and back is oilier than the rest of the body, it
may be necessary to use one product on these areas, and a more moisturizing product on the arms, legs, hands, and feet. Many of the cleansers which are appropriate for acne-prone skin, would be suitable for oily skin.
Dry Skin:
The use of hard-milled face soaps and gentle synthetic detergents are very appropriate for dry skin. It may be necessary to only use cleansers on the face and body folds, when the ambient humidity is low (e.g in the winter or in the south-western United States). There are many liquid cleansers formulated by cosmetic houses, as well as products which are very useful. There are some new products, which incorporate a liquid cleanser in a cleansing sheet, these act to leave on a modicum of petrolatum after the final rinse, and have been demonstrated to be effective.
Normal Skin:
Most people can cleanse with bar soap daily. The synthetic detergent soaps react better with hard water. Liquid cleansers and soap gels are popular at this time, the advantages, being cleaner dispensers in the bathroom. The cleansing sheets may be used for normal skin as well, the petrolatum is suspended in the water by crystals that dissolve in the last rinse leaving the skin feeling smooth and moist. People with normal skin may enjoy using a loofah-type sponge to clean themselves, these have been sold with some liquid cleansers.
Sensitive Skin:
People with sensitive skin can react easily to fragrance and preservatives, and should avoid mechanical
cleansers such as cleansing grains, brushes, and loofahs. Most synthetic detergents have the pH balanced
favorably for the skin and are well tolerated by sensitive persons. A few liquid cleansers are not irritating,
but many interact with the skin because of their additional surfactants. Many of the hard-milled soaps are well tolerated also.
Antibacterial Cleansers:
These products were introduced in the 1960′ s and have been used by many people since. They initially contained photosensitizers, which have since been removed. Triclosan is currently the most common active ingredient. For persons in occupations, which demand extra precautions, these products have been helpful. However, for many dermatologists, these products are very drying to the skin, and they often contribute to hand and body eczema. Various antibacterial cleansers are available that are of benefit to acne patients.
Mild Cleansers
Different gentle skin cleansers are available for acne, there are several types of mild cleansers that you may
use if your skin is irritated or aggravated. There are also several types of specific acne cleansers that you
can use for daily skin care, oil-free and non-comedogenic products are usually advisable.
How to Determine Your Skin Type

Determining your skin type is easy, and the information will help you when buying moisturizers, cosmetics and facial cleansers.
Step One
Wash your face with a skin cleanser, then rinse and pat dry.
Step Two
Wait one hour.
Step Three
Note whether your skin feels “tight.”
Step Four
Press a separate piece of tissue onto each area of your face: chin, center of cheeks, outer cheeks, center of forehead, outer forehead and nose.
Step Five
Examine each tissue and look for oily residue or flaky skin residue.
Step Six
Interpret the results. Oil on each tissue indicates an oily skin type, while oil on only some tissues (specifically those on the T-zone, which is the center of forehead, nose, chin and center of cheeks) indicates a combination skin type. Flaky skin residue on all tissues - without oily residue - or a tight feeling in the skin indicates a dry skin type. No oil and no flaky residue on any parts of the tissue indicates a normal skin type.
Tips & Warnings
Pore size is another indication of skin type; small pores generally indicate dry skin, while large pores mean oily skin. Remember that there are many factors that affect your skin type, such as weather, emotions, hormones and stress, and this will cause your skin type to be in a constant state of fluctuation.
“Combination skin” products that claim to serve different functions on different parts of the face are suspicious. You’re better off using different products on different areas.

The skin has many oil (sebaceous) glands, which secrete oil that contains wax esters, triglycerides, and squalene - a hydrocarbon that is an intermediate in the formation of cholesterol. These fats (or lipids) form a film that helps keep moisture in the skin. While increased sebum production results in oily skin, the opposite is not always the case, as dry skin can also arise from an impaired skin barrier. Oil production can be affected by diet, stress, and hormones-as well as genetics. In a study of twenty pairs each of identical and nonidentical same-sex twins, identical twins had virtually identical amounts of oil production, while the nonidentical twins had significantly different amounts.
No amount of blotting and scrubbing will “remove” the skin’s oil production, and many of us unknowingly destroy the natural beauty of the skin in pursuit of clarity. The skin’s own sebum mechanism is there to regulate own moisture. Drying your skin profusely with oil-stripping, foaming cleansers, detergents and de-greasers like soap and sulfates, or alcohol-based toners that leave the skin feeling tight (always a sign it’s been stripped), will only cause the skin to “rebound” with excess oiliness and destroy its protective and anti-bacterial “matrix,” leaving it sensitized. By stripping the natural acid mantle of the skin, these deep cleaning products actually make skin more vulnerable to bacteria and inflammation. Dabbing benzoyl peroxide often destroys the beauty of the skin by causing flaking, while more aggressive treatments, such as antibiotics or Accutane can cause a cascade of side-effects.
